As part of this year’s “Fit Home” theme at the New Orleans Home & Garden Show, home safety expert and experienced builder Rolf Parelius will present “Home Hardening” seminars, free to show attendees. Seminars will be held each day on the show’s Seminar Stage.
The term ‘home hardening’ is an adaptation from a military and law enforcement concept – target hardening, meaning making a target less attractive or approachable. Parelius, owner of Viking Construction Services in Jefferson Parish, offers this explanation: “The goal is to make it harder for a criminal to gain access to your house. Most people think immediately of cameras and security, but there are any number of other things that the average homeowner can do or have a handyman do that don’t involve technology.”
Prevention is key, says Parelius. “It also goes the furthest,” he says. “The most effective home hardening makes your house the one a criminal skips automatically. My intention is to help people avoid any contact with criminals.”
Parelius will address ways to deter criminal interest through window and door choices, landscaping, lighting, visibility and other options. Several vendors at the show offer products suitable to assist with home hardening efforts, including Acadian Window & Door, Cobra Security Products, Doors of Elegance, Marvin Windows & Doors, Mike Ward’s Liberty Safes, Pella Windows & Doors and many more.
